Introducing the Seiko "Sportsmatic 5" manufactured in 1965.
The Seiko Sportsmatic 5 is an automatic wristwatch introduced in 1963.
It featured practical everyday features such as an automatic movement, a day-date display showing the date and day in a single window, and a water-resistant construction, while maintaining an affordable price for the time.
It also adopted Seiko's proprietary automatic movement mechanism, "Magic Lever," and is known as a model that helped popularize automatic wristwatches among more people.
The year after Seiko served as the official timekeeper for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the Sportsmatic 5 was expanded for export in 1965.
This particular piece is a model manufactured during that period.
It is a piece that conveys the era when the series that set a new standard for practical watches spread both domestically and internationally.
■ Dial and Case Design
The silver dial features a sunray finish that radiates light from the center to the outer edge.
The brightness changes depending on how the light hits it, creating different expressions even within its subdued color.
Fine markings are arranged around the outer edge, with three-dimensional bar indices placed inside them.
The bright surfaces and shadows of the indices add contrast to the dial, making the time easy to read.
The hour and minute hands are slim, sharp dauphine hands that add a three-dimensional effect to the dial as their light-catching surfaces shift.
At the 3 o'clock position is a day-date display that fits the date and day in a single window.
The framed window draws the eye while allowing you to check the date and day at a glance, making it a practical design.
The "SEIKO Sportsmatic 5" logo at the 12 o'clock position and the "WATERPROOF" and "DIASHOCK 21 JEWELS" markings at 6 o'clock convey the name and functions of this watch.
The case is a round stainless steel case.
From the front, a slim bezel surrounds the dial, while viewed from the side, a three-dimensional contour with steps on the case side can be seen.
The lugs, which flow naturally from the case, taper toward the ends, adding a sharp impression to the rounded case.
It is an elegant and clean design that allows you to view the dial broadly through the crystal.
■ Movement

The movement is equipped with Seiko's Caliber 6619A automatic movement.
It is a 21-jewel movement with a mechanism that winds the mainspring as the rotor turns with the movement of your arm.
As indicated by the "DIASHOCK" marking on the dial, it also adopts Seiko's proprietary shock-resistant mechanism that protects the balance staff from impact.
The vibration rate is 18,000 vibrations per hour.
It is a practical configuration that displays the hours, minutes, and seconds, as well as the date and day.
The date can be advanced quickly by pushing in the crown, while the day is switched by advancing the hands.
It is a movement that supports the ease of use characteristic of the Sportsmatic 5 by combining the date and day in a window at the 3 o'clock position.
■ Styling
The case size is 40.8mm in height (including lugs) / 35.5mm in width (including crown) / 12.6mm in thickness / 49g in weight (including strap)
The elegant appearance with bar indices on a silver dial pairs well with jacket-based outfits.
Pairing it with a white shirt, navy jacket, and gray slacks creates a cohesive outfit that makes the most of the watch's subdued atmosphere.
Pairing it with a black leather strap tightens the overall look, and the day-date display is also convenient for everyday use.
It is also easy to pair with casual clothing, naturally blending into styles that combine Oxford shirts or chambray shirts with chinos or dark denim.
It also pairs well with solid-colored knits, cardigans, and simple blousons.
It is a piece that is easy to incorporate into a wide range of occasions, from smart outfits to everyday casual wear.
