Introducing the 1972 Seiko "Bell-Matic."

The Bell-Matic is an automatic wristwatch with a mechanical alarm, introduced in the late 1960s. It was created at a time when wristwatches were evolving from simple timekeeping tools into essential everyday utilities that supported one's daily schedule.

While mechanical alarm watches existed at the time, most were manual-wind models. The Bell-Matic gained popularity, particularly among businessmen, as a multi-functional model featuring an automatic movement, an alarm that rings at the set time, and a day-date display. Some models were marketed under the name "Business-Bell," reflecting its high level of practicality.

Manufacturing continued from the late 1960s through the late 1970s, with designs for cases and dials evolving to match the era. Combining the structural fascination unique to mechanical watches with the distinct, character-filled aesthetic of the 1970s, the Bell-Matic remains a beloved and unique vintage model that represents Seiko.

■ Dial & Case Design

This piece features a gray dial, which is a rare find even among Bell-Matics. The surface is finished with a sunray pattern that spreads radially from the center, creating delicate gradients depending on the angle of the light.

Compared to the white dial version, this model offers a more casual and sporty aesthetic, which is the unique charm of this particular piece. While based on a subdued gray, the red alarm marker on the rotating inner bezel provides a perfect accent, evoking the playful spirit of the 1970s.

The three-dimensional baton indices and bold hour and minute hands create a powerful and highly legible face. The day-date display at the 3 o'clock position ensures the practicality needed for daily use.

The case is characterized by a powerful design that connects linearly from the lugs to the sides of the case. The polished bezel and sharp, edgy case lines lend a refined look to its thick form.

Furthermore, it is fitted with a genuine Seiko metal bracelet consisting of fine links. The integrated design, which connects seamlessly from the case to the bracelet, further highlights the sporty 1970s vibe. Beyond the 3 o'clock crown, the distinct appearance featuring a "bell button" at 2 o'clock—used for turning the alarm on/off and quick-setting the date—is a unique trait of the Bell-Matic.

■ Movement

It is powered by the 27-jewel automatic Cal. 4006A movement. Operating at 19,800 vibrations per hour, it is the quintessential multi-functional Bell-Matic movement, featuring day-date displays and a mechanical alarm.

The mainspring for the timekeeping is wound by the rotor, while the alarm mainspring is manually wound using the crown. When the set time is reached, an internal hammer strikes the chime repeatedly, producing an alarm sound accompanied by the tactile vibration unique to mechanical watches.

Housing automatic winding, a day-date, and an alarm within a single movement, the Cal. 4006A is a testament to the technological prowess of Seiko at the time. The ability to manually operate a mechanical alarm—a feature rarely seen today—is another unique draw of the Bell-Matic.

■ Styling

Case dimensions: Length 42.5mm (including lugs) / Width 40.3mm (including crown) / Thickness 13.6mm / Weight 93g (including bracelet)

The combination of the understated gray dial and the stainless steel bracelet pairs well with casual outfits. By wearing it with denim, chinos, or military pants, you can enjoy that sporty 1970s vibe.

Additionally, since the gray dial is not overly assertive, it blends naturally with navy or gray jacket styles. Despite its unique mechanism, it is easy to incorporate into various outfits, making it a watch you can wear both on and off the clock.

■ Condition

While there are minor signs of use on the dial and case due to age, there is no major damage, and it remains in good condition. The luminous paint on the hands and indices has lost its glow due to aging.

The movement runs smoothly, and the alarm function—a hallmark of the Bell-Matic—is fully functional. You can enjoy both the sound and the vibration of the mechanical alarm.

It is fitted with a genuine Seiko metal bracelet, preserving a sense of unity across the dial, case, and bracelet.

● Important Guide for Antique Watch Purchases ●

At RESUME, we do not deliver antique watches immediately after an order is placed. Instead, we commission an expert craftsman to perform a full overhaul (OH), and the watch will be delivered once the OH is complete. (This process takes approximately 1–2 months.)

A professional craftsman with a First-Class Watch Repair Technician certification will completely disassemble the watch, replace consumable parts such as internal gaskets, clean, oil, and service it to a daily accuracy of ±1 minute.
Along with the watch, we will include our original OH certificate, which details the work performed, as well as photos taken during the disassembly and maintenance of the movement.

While these products are pre-owned and cannot be guaranteed to never break, we take these steps to ensure you can enjoy the watch's original performance and use it with peace of mind for years to come. We appreciate your understanding.

We provide a 1-year warranty period for all purchases, depending on the model. Even after the warranty period expires, we are happy to assist with repairs for a fee. If you do not have a repair shop nearby, please feel free to consult with us.
