Introducing the Seiko "Crown," manufactured in 1963.
The Seiko "Crown" was born in 1959, a year that marked a significant improvement in the precision and quality of Japanese timepieces.
Based on the "Marvel," which debuted in 1956, the movement was further enlarged. By adopting a larger balance wheel and mainspring barrel, Seiko pursued stable precision and sufficient driving force, making this a flagship high-end model of that era.
Its high level of perfection ensured that the design and technology cultivated through the Crown became the foundation for the first Grand Seiko, launched the following year in 1960.
This 1963 model serves as a testament to the era when Seiko was continuously refining its technology to reach the pinnacle of domestic watchmaking.
While a simple manual-wind watch, it carries within it the vital history that would eventually lead to the Grand Seiko.
■ Dial & Case Design
The silver dial features a delicate vertical hairline finish.
It is a distinctive design, even among vintage Crowns; it does not appear overly ornate even when catching the light, and reveals gentle shadows and a calm luster depending on the angle.
The three-dimensional, gold-colored bar indices feature a double marker at the 12 o'clock position, adding a subtle accent to the simple composition.
For the hour and minute hands, faceted dauphine hands with a center ridge are used. Because the left and right surfaces catch light at different angles, they create a play of light and shadow, providing a rich, three-dimensional feel despite their slender profile.
The flowing "Seiko Crown" logo, along with the "DIASHOCK 21 JEWELS" text and star mark at 6 o'clock, are details that convey the charm of that era.
The case features a classic design that combines a refined round form with a slim bezel. Sharp lugs extending outward tighten the overall look, while the gently curved crystal and gold-colored exterior create the elegant, sophisticated aesthetic characteristic of the 1960s.
■ Movement
Equipped with the 21-jewel manual-wind movement, "Cal. 560."
It utilizes a 12 1/2-ligne design, which was large for its time, pursuing a stable oscillation from the large balance wheel and sufficient torque generated by the large mainspring barrel.
The oscillation rate is 18,000 vibrations per hour (5 vibrations per second). It keeps time with a gentle pace characteristic of vintage watches, distinct from modern high-frequency movements.
The balance wheel area is equipped with Seiko's proprietary shock-protection system, "Diashock," which protects the delicate pivots from impact. Furthermore, an oil-retention mechanism known as "Diafix" is also employed to keep lubricant in the proper position, supporting durability and stable operation.
In addition to its simple and robust structure, the Cal. 560 was polished to achieve high precision. The design philosophy and technology cultivated through the Crown and Cal. 560 were passed down to the development of the first Grand Seiko. It is a historically significant movement that symbolizes an era when Seiko's manual-wind watches saw significant advancements.
■ Styling
Case size: Length 43.5mm (including lugs) / Width 39.3mm (including crown) / Thickness 10.8mm / Weight 34g (including strap)
The combination of the silver dial with its calm luster and the warm gold-colored case pairs perfectly with elegant styles such as jackets and shirts.
When worn with a navy or charcoal gray jacket, the gold's brilliance acts as a tasteful accent, creating a classic and intellectual impression. It also integrates naturally with softer outfits like beige or brown knitwear and chinos.
If you pair it with a brown embossed leather strap and match your leather shoes and belt in similar tones, it creates a cohesive look. With its refined design that isn't overly assertive, it is a versatile piece suitable for everything from suit styles to polished off-duty attire.

● Important Information Regarding Antique Watch Purchases ●
At RESUME, we do not ship antique watches immediately upon order. Instead, we commission a professional craftsman to perform an overhaul (OH) and ship the product only after the OH is complete. (The duration is approximately 1 to 2 months.)
A certified first-class watch repair technician will completely disassemble the watch, replace consumable parts such as internal gaskets, clean the components, apply oil, and perform a thorough overhaul to ensure the daily accuracy is maintained within approximately ±1 minute.
Upon delivery, we will include our store's original OH certificate, which details the work performed, along with photos taken during the disassembly and maintenance of the movement.
Naturally, due to the nature of these products being second-hand, there is no absolute guarantee that they will never break. However, we have adopted this process to ensure you can enjoy the watch's original performance and use it with peace of mind in the future. We kindly ask for your understanding.
At the time of purchase, we provide a 1-year warranty period depending on the model. Even for products outside the warranty period, we are happy to provide repair services for a fee. Please feel free to consult with us even if there is no repair shop near you.
