Introducing the 1964 Seiko "Crown."
The Seiko "Crown" was born in 1959, a year that marked significant advancements in the precision of Japanese mechanical watches.
Its foundation was the "Marvel," which appeared in 1956 and was praised as a high-performance model representing Seiko in the post-war era.
The Crown inherited that design but scaled up the movement to a larger 12½ ligne size.
By enlarging the balance wheel, stable accuracy was pursued, further enhancing the perfection of Seiko's hand-wound watches.
The design and manufacturing techniques cultivated in the Crown were also inherited by the first Grand Seiko, which was born the following year in 1960.
Furthermore, in 1964, Japan's first chronograph, the "Crown Chronograph," appeared, and its name was also used for models that symbolized Seiko's technological challenges.
■Dial and Case Design
The dial is a bright silver color.
It features a fine radial finish from the center outwards, gently changing its expression depending on the angle of light.
A characteristic of this dial is the multiple thin concentric lines applied to the outer perimeter.
By layering delicate lines along the edge of the dial, a suitable amount of decoration and depth is added to the simple silver dial. It naturally connects with the fine minute markers on the outer edge, serving as an accent that tightens the broad dial.
The indices are three-dimensional applied bar indices.
Slender indices are placed at each hour position, with only the 12 o'clock position featuring a wider, larger index.
The hands are dauphine hands with a ridge in the center. When they catch the light, the left and right surfaces reflect differently, adding a three-dimensional quality to the simple dial.
At the 12 o'clock position is the "Seiko Crown" logo in script, and at the 6 o'clock position is "DIASHOCK 21 JEWELS," indicating its shock resistance and 21-jewel specification.
The simple configuration without a date display highlights the radial finish, the delicate craftsmanship on the outer perimeter, and the three-dimensional indices.
The case is a large size, approximately 42.8mm vertically and 39mm horizontally.
It is noticeably larger than a typical Crown and is a size rarely seen among existing examples.
It boasted an outstanding case size for a Japanese hand-wound watch of its time, and despite its classic design, it offers a solid presence on modern wrists.
Despite the 39mm width of the case, the bezel is designed to be thin, creating an open design that makes the dial appear larger. Combined with the large case size, this allows for a clear appreciation of the radial finish and the delicate lines on the outer perimeter.
The lugs extend straight from the case, tapering sharply towards the tips.
By combining a round case with slender lugs, it avoids a heavy appearance despite its large size, resulting in a clean silhouette.
Viewed from the side, the crystal has a three-dimensional, raised shape, higher than the bezel.
The combination of a thin bezel and a bulging crystal offers the soft appearance characteristic of 1960s vintage watches.
■Movement
It is equipped with the 21-jewel manual-winding "Cal.560" movement.
This movement for the Crown, featuring a large balance wheel, is characterized by a design that pursued stable accuracy.
The bridge is marked "SEIKOSHA 21 JEWELS," and the orange lettering adds an accent to the movement.
The design of the large manual-winding movement cultivated in the Crown was a crucial mechanism that supported Seiko's pursuit of high precision, leading to the later first Grand Seiko.
■Styling
The case size is 42.8mm (including lugs) vertically / 39mm (including crown) horizontally / 10.1mm thick / 36g weight.
The large case and expansive silver dial create a solid presence on the wrist.
For a clean look paired with a jacket or shirt, the Crown's refined design blends naturally, adding a calm, classic touch.
On the other hand, even when paired with casual attire like knitwear, cardigans, or denim, the slender indices and delicate decorations on the outer edge give the wrist a neat and sharp appearance.
While possessing a vintage feel, its large 39mm case makes it an easy piece to incorporate into modern styles.
■Condition
While there are minor signs of use on the case and dial appropriate for its age, there are no significant scratches or damages that would greatly detract from its appearance.
Although there is some dirt visible on the movement, its operation is not an issue, and it is in a condition where it can be used normally.
Overall, it remains in a condition without significant damage.
