Introducing the 1971 Seiko "Speed-Timer".
The Seiko Speed-Timer is known as a series equipped with Cal.6139, an automatic chronograph that appeared in 1969.
At a time when the development of automatic chronographs was progressing worldwide, Seiko of Japan was quick to put it into practical use, making it an important model in the history of Japanese watches.
■Dial/Case Design
This is a striking timepiece from the 70s, featuring a deep black dial accented with orange and blue.
The dial is based on a calm black. The outer rim features fine minute tracks and chronograph scales, giving it a dense appearance reminiscent of a measuring instrument.
What's striking are the orange-colored chronograph hands and the "Speed-Timer" logo. The clear contrast with the black dial enhances its functional impression and also serves as a good accent for readability.
The indices are thick, applied bar indices. By adding a white line in the center, time can be easily read even on a dark-colored dial, ensuring legibility as a practical watch. The hour and minute hands also feature a white line, which tightens the overall impression of the dial.
A blue sub-dial is placed at the 6 o'clock position. The addition of vibrant blue to the black and orange combination further highlights the unique character of the 70s Speed-Timer.
The outer rim features an inner bezel that rotates with the crown. This not only enhances the functional appearance typical of a chronograph but also offers an enjoyable gimmick characteristic of 70s sports watches.
The case is a cushion-shaped stainless steel case with a wide horizontal spread. It features a distinctive line connecting the rounded bezel to the case side, giving it a strong presence typical of a chronograph, yet surprisingly fitting well on the wrist.
The case surface has a satin finish, allowing the texture of the metal to be fully appreciated. With a high degree of integration with the original bracelet, this timepiece offers a design balance unique to 70s Seiko.
■Movement
The movement is Seiko's automatic chronograph movement, Cal.6139A.
The chronograph mechanism adopts a column wheel and vertical clutch. In addition to the column wheel that controls start, stop, and reset operations, it is equipped with a vertical clutch that operates the chronograph while suppressing hand jump, achieving a high level of completeness as an automatic chronograph at the time.
In terms of practicality, it features a central chronograph second hand and a 30-minute counter at the 6 o'clock position. The design neatly combines regular time display and chronograph functions, taking ease of use as a sports watch into consideration.
■Styling
Case size: 44.1mm (length), 41.2mm (width), 14mm (thickness), Weight: 103g
With its black dial and orange and blue accents, this watch makes a strong statement even in casual styles.
It naturally complements everyday attire such as denim, chinos, sweatshirts, and military jackets. Its chronograph appearance ensures that your wrist won't look bland even with simple outfits.
It pairs particularly well with simple tops like plain cut-and-sewns, sweatshirts, and work shirts. Since the watch itself has color and detail, it adds a 70s sports watch vibe to your wrist without drastically altering your overall look.
■Condition
The case has minor scratches from use, but no noticeable damage or deep scratches.
The dial is in original condition and readability is good.
The movement is running well and there are no issues with its use.
The chronograph function is also working normally.
It is fitted with the original Speed-Timer metal bracelet.
