Introducing the 1972 Seiko "5 Sports Speed-Timer."
In the latter half of the 1960s, competition to develop "automatic chronographs" intensified in the watch industry.
Amidst this, Seiko released the "5 Sports Speed-Timer" in 1969.
Housing an automatic movement and chronograph in a practical size, it made its mark in watch history as one of the world's first automatic chronographs.
In addition to precise measurement functions, it also featured date and day displays, pursuing everyday usability as a sports watch.
Subsequently, it expanded its movement and design variations, evolving with bold case designs and vibrant color schemes.
■Dial and Case Design
The blue-based dial features a radial finish that shows beautiful shades depending on the angle of light.
The bright blue chapter ring, orange chronograph hand, and "Speed-Timer" logo serve as accents, giving it a sporty look.
Luminous paint is applied to the hands and bar indices for improved visibility.
A day and date display is located at 3 o'clock, making it a practical configuration suitable for daily use despite being a chronograph.
A "decimal meter" is placed on the outer edge of the dial to read one minute in 100 units.
This unique scale, different from typical chronographs, adds a professional touch and distinctive look, reminiscent of a measuring instrument.
The stainless steel case encasing the circular dial has a powerful form that projects significantly to the left and right.
Combining a thick case with a straight bracelet creates a sense of gravitas, characteristic of Seiko's sports models of that era.
■Movement
The installed movement is the "Cal.7015A," an automatic chronograph developed by Daini Seikosha.
It is a unique Seiko mechanical movement with 21 jewels, a vibration frequency of 21,600 vph, and a power reserve of approximately 43 hours.
The chronograph mechanism employs a vertical clutch system.
This suppresses needle jumps during operation, allowing the central orange chronograph hand to move smoothly.
Another feature is its configuration, which focuses on measuring up to one minute, showing elapsed time only with the central chronograph hand, without sub-dials.
Combined with the decimal meter on the outer edge of the dial, elapsed time can be read converted into 100 units.
Furthermore, it is equipped with a "flyback function," which allows the hands to instantly return to zero by pressing the reset button during measurement, and then immediately start a new measurement.
This was an advanced mechanism for its time, allowing the usual operations of stop, reset, and restart to be performed in a single action.
The Cal.7015A, which houses a complex chronograph mechanism in a relatively thin design, is a movement that reflects Seiko's high technical capabilities in the 1970s.
■Styling
The case size is 44.7mm (including lugs) / 39.2mm (including crown) / 12.8mm thick / 99g (including band)
The Speed-Timer, with its vibrant dial and orange accents, instantly adds a vintage presence to your wrist when incorporated into a simple outfit.
It pairs particularly well with casual styles involving denim, military pants, and sweatshirts.
The voluminous case and stainless steel bracelet create a moderately rugged and retro atmosphere for your outfit.
It is also recommended to pair it with calm-colored styling, such as a navy jacket or shirt.
The dial color blends naturally, while the chronograph hand and logo provide subtle accents.
Although it has a strong sporty impression, the overall coordinated color scheme makes this watch easy to incorporate into everyday outfits.

●Important information after purchasing an antique watch. Please read carefully.●
At RESUME, when selling antique watches, instead of delivering them immediately upon order,
we request an overhaul (OH) by a specialized craftsman, and deliver the watch after the OH is completed. (This usually takes about 1-2 months.)
A professional craftsman, certified as a Class 1 watch repair technician, will completely disassemble the watch, replace worn parts such as internal gaskets, clean, and lubricate it.
Through thorough OH, the watch will be serviced to an accuracy of approximately ±1 minute per day.
Upon delivery, we will also include our unique OH certificate, explaining the work performed, as well as photos of the movement disassembly
and servicing.
While the product itself is used and therefore cannot be guaranteed never to break, we take these steps to ensure you can enjoy the watch's original performance
and use it with confidence in the future. We appreciate your understanding.
When purchasing a product, a 1-year warranty period is provided depending on the model. Even for products whose warranty period has expired,
we offer repair services for a fee. Please feel free to consult us even if there is no repair shop nearby.
